Tuesday, 17th August 2010 – Kilorglin and Killarney, Ireland

A promising day ahead with sun on the horizon… thought we’d do the Ring of Kerry, but got waylaid firstly at the South Pole Pub in Annascaul (a tiny place as it only has 7 pubs, but famous in these parts owing to the Irish Arctic explorer Tom Crean who was a member of the legendary expedition to Antarctica in 1914).

Then, waylaid again in Kilorglin, at their great public library where we had fun updating the blog and writing postcards, besides wandering around this lovely little village. We were very pleasantly surprised to find a Timmy’s in the local Spar supermarket… so I absolutely had to get a large one – what a treat after all the Nescafe!

We then headed over to the bustling town of Killarney – it’s very grand and packed with restaurants, shops, cafes and yes you guessed it the occasional pub!!!! Guess what we did then? – sorry no prizes for those of you thinking Ron-Guinness! Headed home via Blennerville which has the largest working windmill in Ireland and Tralee who are having the Rose of Tralee festival on this weekend, so they were getting their town all gussied up with lights and banners and everywhere we went it was very festive. One thing we have learned is that the Irish know how to party and throw a good party… too bad we’ll be gone by the weekend, but happy to have been here for the lead-in. We ended the day getting home around 8:30pm (after a quick stop for a pint of G and a coffee at our local, the Ashes pub, just down the road from our digs) just in time for Ron to take a couple of snaps of the lovely sunset from the house. Hopefully, we’ll make the Ring of Kerry tomorrow if we don’t get waylaid again…….
